原詩The Poem
The Poet’s Own Translation
Gold-thread curtains, floor-to-ceiling glass.Far across the middle of the lake, the River of Stars trembles thread by thread, keeping me awake as autumn wind carries water downhill.I ask the autumn wind where it began.“Mist and starlight, dim and boundless. The Torch Dragon’s cold light locks away sun and moon—how desolate this long night.I heard Blue Mountain was at its height:the lake broad as sea, lifting the morning sun;green runs streaming like waterfalls;mountains in brocade, people woven through the color.”“The green streams still fall,” I answer,“but the tall trees have thinned.Maple red, that painted blaze, is hard to find;yet autumn’s remnants are wonder enough.By day I climbed the ridge. Heavy cloudblotted the lake from sight. In the falling light, one desolate sweep:tree after tree in late autumn, mountain after mountain yellow.Yellow leaves filled the ravines; more than onceI could no longer tell where I was.Only the stream went speaking downhill.I followed its voice across fallen leaves toward home. The path turned, the mountain turned, the water quickenedand burst into a deep pool. I stood there, unable to leave, face lifted to shattered jade, wind-blown spraydrifting like willow down.Rock by rock, branch in hand, I circled the pool, but the stream was nowhere.A waterfall runs here day and night—why does the pool never fill, its water never rise?On the way back, the stream did not appear again.I felt its loss and had no words.Back in my room, I sat until my head dropped, mind entangled, dreams drawing me on.At midnight, the bright moon stirs blue water.Ripple after ripple becomes the River of Stars.I wake to understand: the pool has entered the sea;autumn waves glance back, graceful, again and again.”May autumn wind carry autumn water;may dream carry me beside itto the River of Stars.

Appreciation

A sleepless night carries the day’s search for water into a conversation with the autumn wind. Falls, pool, lake and stars connect through memory and imagination, as though the vanished stream has returned in another form. The ending does not solve the puzzle encountered on the mountain. It invites the water onward, turning uncertainty into something the imagination can still follow.
