原詩The Poem
The Poet’s Own Translation
Three feet of steel still stir the winds of Qin;since ancient days, its purpose has ranged unbound.Where Jing Ke’s spirit was cut down, the blade points toward the Nine Provinces made one.Its edge was blunted by Han Fei’s law;within its sheath abides the Huang-Lao Way.Dong Zhongshu bent doctrine toward private ends;Confucius cut through the husk of fame. Its craft shakes the four directions;its hilt bears deeds renowned through a hundred generations.A great state seldom finds an instrument so keen;cut into the blade: Hold faithfully to the Center. For one sworn word, a noble man gives his life, tossing Mount Tai aside as though it weighed nothing. Were rank and glory ever what I wanted?I would sweep away the wrongs of the world. In golden halls, it rests beside the broad ceremonial sash;among rivers and lakes, it decides life and death.Cleaving the air, it pursues the sun;its long cry is heard by the moon.Raised in dance, it throws heavy clouds into turmoil;I strike the scabbard and wait for thunder.Within the boundless dusk,a thousand years of feeling remain.
註釋Annotation

Appreciation

The sword is both a physical object and a means of considering history and personal obligation. Names and traditions gather around its blade, bringing power into conversation with restraint. The inscription’s appeal to hold to the centre turns the poem back toward the speaker’s own responsibilities. Its closing dance and cry preserve the energy of the weapon while leaving its unfinished feeling in the dusk.
