小序The Poet’s Preface

At Hanpo Pass I stood, to watch the sunrise over the Five Elders Peaks—to trace the vestiges of Yu, to visit the place where Zhou Kuang soared to immortality, to seek the lingering steps of Li Bai, Bai Juyi, and Su Dongpo. Descending on foot along the waterfalls of the Five Elders and the Three-Tiered Spring, I recalled the Records of the Historian, where Sima Qian wrote: "I ascended Mount Lu in the south, and saw where Yu had channeled the Nine Rivers." Now treading where the ancients once trod, my heart swelled with awe and exultation—drunk with wonder, I composed this Ballad of Mount Lu. Indeed, Mount Lu—how miraculous, how supreme beneath the sky!

原詩The Poem
The Poet’s Own Translation
Ah, Mount Lu—beauty foremost among all peaks under heaven.Sunrise breaks through the sea of cloudand carves a golden lotus from the sky.The mountains rouge themselves; the lake becomes their mirror.Dawn enters the water and clears a second blue.Great ridges shift between darkness and light;from here, rivers and lakes gather into one vast gaze. Then cloud and mist rise, hiding the true face of heaven and earth.Past and present lose their paths.Alone, I go in search of the immortals’ traces. At Yu’s Grotto I stop and look north:the Nine Rivers he guided all run east.Where Zhou Kuang fled office and rose beyond the world, this common traveler bows from afar.Li Bai thought the River of Stars had fallen from outside heaven;Dongpo had already begun to understand the Way.Where now are the true spirits of old?At Dalin, tears scatter through the peach-blossom wind. The wind comes and scours the sky clear, drawing me down from the blue-green peaks.A stair into heaven clings to the sheer wall;each step startles the heart.Above me, cliffs rise a thousand feet;high birds nest in their faces.Green damp soaks my clothes.May’s cold enters deep.Grass and trees across the mountain know warmth and cold;rhododendrons under the sun look ready to burn. The Five Elders stand in grave silence, seeing me off without a word.Sandie Spring turns and turns, thundering into the deep pool.To know Mount Lu’s true face, live inside it—heart unbound.Since ancient days, those who climb have sighed:when will the immortals ride the wind home? The ages pass with a bleak rustling; our waiting comes to nothing. The road ahead burns through dream and soul.I look back and barely make out the path I climbed.Clouds bar the summit; my thoughts cross and recross.

Appreciation

Clouds, peaks and waterfalls unfold along the walk, while remembered figures enter the present landscape. The poem moves between exhilaration and uncertainty: closeness to the mountain does not make either history or the self entirely clear. In the final backward glance, clouds still cross the summit. The journey has found a stopping place, but the thoughts it has stirred remain open.
