White Deer Grotto Academy
原詩The Poem
The Poet’s Own Translation
The white deer, alive to the unseen—what makes it sigh? The academy lies desolate, hidden among trees and springs. Its master’s name grew after death; the lineage of letters flourished;moss covers the steps; one visitor bows alone. The Classics find heirs beside the Buddha and Dao,while a rootless world bows down to money and power.Back in the grotto, the deer lies down with a long sigh,to wait out another five hundred years among us.

Appreciation
The white deer becomes a witness capable of sorrow, while the academy’s celebrated name contrasts with its quiet grounds. Mossy steps, a solitary visitor and the deer’s withdrawal give the loss a physical presence. The ending carries its waiting far into the future. Disappointment remains, but so does a hesitant expectation that learning may once again find a place in the world.
